πŸ”¬ β€œGenomic insights into a clade-specific Candida tropicalis lineage with resistance to azoles and immune evasion traits”
πŸ“„ https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mbio.00235-26

In this study, we performed large-scale population genomics and comparative genomic analyses to investigate the emergence and expansion of a clade-specific lineage of Candida tropicalis associated with antifungal resistance.

Key technical insights:

  • Identification of a distinct azole-resistant lineage, suggesting clade-restricted evolution of resistance traits
  • Enrichment of genomic features linked to adhesion, host interaction, and immune evasion, indicating enhanced pathogenic fitness
  • Evidence supporting adaptive evolution within this lineage, potentially facilitating its persistence and dissemination
  • Integration of genome-wide variation with population structure frameworks to resolve lineage-specific diversification
  • Implications for regional epidemiology, particularly in high-burden settings such as the Asia-Pacific, where C. tropicalis contributes significantly to invasive candidiasis

Collectively, our findings demonstrate how lineage-specific genomic architectures can couple antifungal resistance with virulence-associated traits, providing a framework for tracking high-risk fungal populations and informing surveillance strategies.

We look forward to engaging discussions and feedback from the community.
